tragedies than a party. Look at Romeo. He kills his true love out of sheer stupidity. Imagine
living with that. Though, I do envy him 1 thing.

Juliet is like perfect--if you like that obviously beautiful sort of thing.
EDWARD
No, not the girl, the uh...uh--the suicide. It's nearly impossible for um...some...people.

respect for human life, of course, but, respect for the arts and the sciences at least.
And the law, above all law.

Vampires have laws?
EDWARD
Not very many. And only 1 that's regularly enforced.

That we keep the existance of our kind a secret.

CARLISLE
It's not your fault. Jasper hasn't been away from human blood as long as the rest of us.

CARLISLE
Years and years of practice.

And you didn't even choose it. It must've been really hard.
CARLISLE
Like everything else in life, I just had to decide what to do
with what I was given.
BELLA
Did you ever think of just doing it the easy way?
CARLISLE
No. I knew who I wanted to be. I wanted to help people. It brings me happiness, even if I am
damned regardless.
BELLA
Damned? Like...like hell? Carlisle, you couldn't be damned. You couldn't. It's impossible.
CARLISLE
Thank you, Bella. You've always been very...gracious about us.
By all other accounts, though, we are damned.
But, I hope...maybe foolishly that we get some measure of credit for
trying.
BELLA
Do they all think like this?
CARLISLE
Edward...doesn't believe there's an afterlife for our kind.
We believe
this is our afterlife in exchange for this limited immortality. We've lost our souls.
BELLA
So that's it? That's why he won't change me?
CARLISLE
Imagine the situation in reverse. Hm? If you believed as Edward does, could you take away
his soul?

They're not really fighting, Bella. They're cliff diving. Scary as hell, but a total rush.

Most of us jump from lower down. They leave the showing off to Sam and his
disciples.

JACOB
I don't know. They just think they run this place. Embry used to call them hall monitors on
steroids. Now, look at him.

He missed some school, then all of a sudden he started following Sam around like a little
puppy.
Same thing happened with Paul and Jared. Sam keeps giving me this look...like he's awaiting for me or something.

Like, five hikers have been killed by some bear. But, they can't find the bear.
