The Twilight Saga: #1
TWILIGHT [2008]
Original Movie Screenplay by Melissa
Rosenberg
Adapted from the novel, "Twilight" [2005] by Stephenie Meyer
Lines in blue were not included in the theatrical version.
All the [???] you see means that I was not
100% sure what the line was because I simply couldn't hear what was said.
BELLA
I'd never given much thought to how I would die, but, dying in the place of someone I love...seems
like a good way to go--
so, I can't bring myself to regret the decision to leave home.
I would miss Phoenix. I'd miss the heat. I would
miss my loving, erratic, hare-brained mother--
RENEE
Okay. [[Mm--muah]].
PHIL
Renee! Come on!
BELLA
--and her new husband.
PHIL
Guys, come on. I love you both, but, we've got a plane to catch.
BELLA
But, they want to go on the road, so I'm gonna spend some time with my dad, and this will
be a good thing--I think.
BELLA
In the state of Washington, under a near constant cover of clouds and rain, there's a small
town named Forks.
Population: 3,120 people. This is where I'm moving.
My dad's Charlie. He's the chief of police.
CHARLIE
Your hair's longer.
BELLA
Oh--I cut it since the last time I saw you.
CHARLIE
Oh. Guess it grew out again.
BELLA
I used to spend two weeks here almost every summer, but, it's been years.
CHARLIE
I've cleared some shelves off in the bathroom.
BELLA
Oh, right--one bathroom.
CHARLIE
It's a pretty good work lamp. The sales lady picked out the--the bed stuff. You like~you like
purple, right?
BELLA
Purple's cool. Thanks.
CHARLIE
Okay.
BELLA
One of the best things about Charlie: he doesn't hover.
CHARLIE
Heard you guys coming all the way down the road.
BILLY
Good to see you.
CHARLIE
Bella, you remember Billy Black?
BELLA
Yeah. Wow, you're looking good.
BILLY
Well, I'm still dancing. I'm glad you're finally here. Charlie here hasn't shut up about it since you
told him you were coming.
CHARLIE
All right. Keep exaggerating. I'll roll you into the mud.
BILLY
After I ram you in the ankles.
CHARLIE
You want to go?
BILLY
Yeah. Bring it!
JACOB
Hi, I'm~I'm Jacob.
BELLA
Hey.
JACOB
We, uh~we used to make mud pies when we were little.
BELLA
Right. No, I remember. Are they always like this?
JACOB
It's getting worse with old age.
CHARLIE
So, what do you think?
BELLA
Of what?
CHARLIE
Your homecoming present.
BELLA
This?
CHARLIE
Just bought it off Billy here.
BILLY
Yep.
JACOB
I totally rebuilt the engine for you.
BELLA
Come on! Oh, my gosh. Th~this is perfect! Are you joking me? Sorry.
BILLY
I told you she'd love it. I'm down with the kids.
CHARLIE
Oh, yeah, dude. You're the bomb.
JACOB
Okay. Um...listen, you gotta double-pump the clutch when you shift, but, besides that, you
should be good.
BELLA
That's this one?
JACOB
Yeah. Yeah, right there.
BELLA
All right. Do you want a ride to school or something?
JACOB
Oh, I go to school on the reservation.
BELLA
Oh, right, right.
JACOB
Yeah.
BELLA
That's too bad. It would've been nice to know one person.
BELLA
My first day at a new school. It's March--middle of the semester. Great.
TYLER
Nice ride.
BELLA
Thanks.
FEMALE STUDENT
Good one.
ERIC
You're Isabella Swan--the new girl. Hi, I'm Eric, "the eyes and ears" of this place. Um...anything you
need: tour guide, lunch date, shoulder to cry on--
BELLA
--Uh...I'm really kind of the more suffer-in-silence type.
ERIC
Good headline for your feature! I'm on the paper, and you're news, baby--front page.
BELLA
No, I'm not. You...please, don't have any sort of--
ERIC
--Whoa, whoa. Chillax. No feature.
BELLA
Okay, thanks.
ERIC
Cool?
FEMALE STUDENTS
All right. Okay. Yeah. I got it. Get it. Get it. Get it. To you.
MIKE
Whoa!
BELLA
I'm sorry. I told them not to let me play.
MIKE
No way. No, no, no. That's... That's... Don't...You're Isabella, right?
BELLA
Just Bella.
MIKE
Yeah. Hey, I'm, uh~I'm Mike Newton.
BELLA
Oh. Nice to meet you.
MIKE
Yeah, yeah.
JESSICA
She's got a great spike, huh?
MIKE
Yeah, it's...
JESSICA
I'm Jessica, by the way. Hey, you're from Arizona, right?
BELLA
Yeah.
JESSICA
Aren't people from Arizona supposed to be, like, really tan?
BELLA
Yeah. Maybe that's why they kicked me out.
MIKE
You're good.
JESSICA
That's so funny.
FEMALE STUDENT
Back in, Jess. Down here.
ERIC
Like a masterpiece, you know, we'll have, like, this crazy pyramid fall from the sky, and then you guys
can--
MIKE
It's my pleasure, Madame.
ERIC
You guys can give each other high fives.
MIKE
Burrito, my friend?
ERIC
Hey! Mikey. You met my home-girl Bella?
MIKE
Oh. Your~your~your home girl?
ERIC
Yeah!
MIKE
Yeah?
TYLER
My girl. Sorry I had to mess up your game, Mike.
ERIC
Oh, Tyler.
JESSICA
Oh, my God. It's like 1st grade all over again. You're the shiny new toy.
ANGELA
Smile!
BELLA
Okay.
ANGELA
Sorry. I needed a candid for the feature.
ERIC
The feature's dead, Angela! Don't bring it up again.
BELLA
It's okay. I just...
ERIC
I~I got your back, baby.
ANGELA
Guess we'll just run another editorial on...teen drinking.
BELLA
You know, you can always go for...eating disorders / Speedo padding on the swim team.
ANGELA
Actually, that's a good one!
JESSICA
Kirk. Right? That's exactly what I thought. We're talking Olympic-size.
ANGELA
There's no way. He's so skinny. It doesn't make sense.
JESSICA
Totally.
ANGELA
Yeah.
JESSICA
Sorry.
BELLA
Who are they?
ANGELA
The Cullens.
JESSICA
They're, um...Dr. and Mrs. Cullen's foster kids. They moved down here from Alaska, like, a few
years ago.
ANGELA
They...kind of keep to themselves.
JESSICA
Yeah, 'cause they're all together. Like, together-together. Um...
The blonde
girl--that's Rosalie, and, the big dark-haired guy, Emmett--they're, like, a thing. I'm not even sure that's legal.
ANGELA
Jess, they're not actually related.
JESSICA
Yeah, but they live together. It's weird! And, okay.
The little dark-haired girl
is Alice. She's really weird; and, um, she's with Jasper--the blond one who looks like he's in pain.
Um...Dr. Cullen's like this foster dad /
matchmaker.
ANGELA
Maybe he'll adopt me.
BELLA
Who~who's he?
JESSICA
That's Edward Cullen. He's totally gorgeous, obviously, but, apparently, nobody here's good
enough for him. Like I care, you know? So, yeah.
Seriously, like, don't waste your time.
BELLA
I wasn't planning on it.
MIKE
Mr. Molina.
MR. MOLINA
Hey, Mike.
Oh, yes. Miss Swan. Hi. Can I have the pass? Thank you. Welcome to the class. Here. Here's your stuff, okay? And, um-I got a seat
for you right here, so come over. The last one. Just follow along till you catch up.
[Lecture]
All right, guys. Today, we are
gonna be observing the behavior of planaria--a.k.a. flatworms. So what we're gonna do...
...regenerate. Zombie worms. No cell phones.
Guys, let's get to it. Gentle, gentle. ...certain areas.
Please just don't cut here. We don't cut here. You won't believe this. Let's try to focus
while we check those out, huh, guys?
EDWARD
There must be something open. Physics? Bio/chem?
MRS. COPE
No, every class is full!
Just a minute, dear.
I'm afraid you'll have to
stay in biology.
EDWARD
Fine. Just...I'll just have to endure it.
EMMETT
Edward! She's not one of us!
WAITRESS
I just can't get over how grown up you are--and so gorgeous.
WAYLON
Hey, Bella. You remember me? I played Santa one year.
CHARLIE
Yeah, Waylon--she hasn't had a Christmas here since she was 4.
WAYLON
I bet I made an impression, though, didn't I?
CHARLIE
You always do.
BELLA
"Butt-crack Santa"?
WAYLON
Hey, kids love those little bottles, though.
WAITRESS
All right. Let the girl eat her garden burger, Waylon.
As soon as you're done, I will
bring you your favorite--berry cobbler, remember? Your dad still has it--every Thursday.
BELLA
Thank you. That'd be great.
CHARLIE
Oh. Here.
BELLA
Thanks.
BELLA
So...do you eat
here every night?
CHARLIE
Um...yeah. Better than doing dishes.
BELLA
I can cook. I used to do the cooking at home in Phoenix. Mom's not great in
the kitchen.
CHARLIE
I remember.
BOTH
Chocolate candles.
CHARLIE
So, um...how's school? You meet anybody?
BELLA
Yeah. Yeah, a couple people. Do you know the Cullen family?
CHARLIE
Yeah, why? People talking about them, again?
BELLA
Yeah~a little bit.
CHARLIE
It's only 'cause they're newcomers. Listen, the Cullens--they've been
nothing but nice ever since they moved here.
People around here, they should~they should be happy--have a surgeon like Dr. Cullen in our
podunk hospital.
Happy his wife wanted to move into a small town,
and his kids--those kids give me no trouble--not like the other
hell-raisers around here.
BELLA
Right.
CHARLIE
I just don’t like narrow-mindedness, you know?
RENEE
Hey, baby--so, listen--if spring training goes well, we could be moving to Florida.
Please insert $1.25 for an additional 3 minutes.
BELLA
Mom, where's your cell?
RENEE
Okay, don't laugh. I didn't lose my power cord. It ran away--screaming. I literally repel
technology now.
BELLA
I miss you.
RENEE
Oh, baby, I miss you, too. But tell me more about your school. Now, what are the kids like? Are
there any cute guys? Are they being nice to you?
BELLA
Ugh. Well...they're all very welcoming.
RENEE
Uh oh. Tell me all about it.
BELLA
It doesn't even matter.
RENEE
Yes, it does, honey.
BELLA
I~I have homework to do. Um...I'll talk to you later.
RENEE
Okay. I love you.
BELLA
Love you, too.
BELLA
I planned to confront him...and demand to know what his problem was
--but, he never
showed.
TYLER
Bella!
BELLA
And the next day--another no-show. More days passed. Things were getting a
little...strange.
CHARLIE
You all right?
BELLA
Yeah, I'm good. Ice doesn't really help the uncoordinated.
CHARLIE
Yeah. That's why I had some new tires put on the truck. Old ones were getting pretty bald.
Well, probably be late for dinner. I gotta head down to Mason County. Security guard at the Grisham Mill got killed by some kind of
animal.
BELLA
An animal?
CHARLIE
You're not in Phoenix anymore, Bells. Anyway, I figured I'd lend a hand.
BELLA
Be careful.
CHARLIE
Always am.
BELLA
Thanks for the tires.
CHARLIE
Yep.
ERIC
Prom Committee is a chick thing, but, I gotta cover it for the paper anyway, and they need a guy to
help choose the music, so, I need your play list.
Hey, listen, I was wondering--did you have a~ date to--
MIKE
--'Sup, Arizona? Huh? How you liking the rain, girl?! Better get used to it, girl.
ERIC
Yeah, Mike? Hey. You're real cute, man.
MIKE
Oh, I know.
ERIC
That was really~that was really awesome. Why you shooting down my game? Let a playa play.
MIKE
Yeah, okay. What you playin'? T-Ball?
EDWARD
Hello. I'm sorry I didn't get a chance to introduce myself last week. Um...I'm Edward Cullen.
You're Bella?
BELLA
Um...yes.
MR. MOLINA
Onion root tip cells--that's what's on your slides right now. Okay?
So, separate and
label them into the phases of mitosis, and the first partners that get it right are gonna win...the Golden Onion.
CLASS
Boo!
EDWARD
Ladies first.
BELLA
You were gone.
EDWARD
Yeah. Um, I was out of town for a couple of days. Personal reasons.
BELLA
Uh, Prophase.
EDWARD
Do you mind if I, uh, look? It's prophase.
BELLA
Like I said.
EDWARD
So you enjoying the rain? ...What?
BELLA
You're asking me about the weather?
EDWARD
Yeah, I...I guess I am.
BELLA
Well, I don't really like the rain. Any cold/wet thing, I don't really ...What?
EDWARD
Nothing. Uh.. It's, uh, anaphase.
BELLA
You mind if I check?
EDWARD
Sure.
BELLA
Anaphase.
EDWARD
Like I said.
If you hate the cold and the rain so much, why'd you move to the wettest
place in the continental US?
BELLA
Um...it's complicated.
EDWARD
I'm sure I can keep up.
BELLA
Uh...my mom remarried, and, um...
EDWARD
So, you don't like the guy, or...
BELLA
No, I mean, that's not...um...Phil's really nice.
EDWARD
It's metaphase. You wanna check it?
BELLA
I believe you.
EDWARD
Why didn't you move with your mother and Phil?
BELLA
Well, Phil's a minor league baseball player, and, uh, he travels a lot,
and my mom stayed
home with me, but I knew it made her unhappy, so, uh, I figured I'd stay with my dad for a while.
EDWARD
And now you are unhappy?
BELLA
...No.
EDWARD
I'm sorry, I'm just...I'm just trying to figure you out. You're very difficult for me to read.
BELLA
Hey, did you get contacts?
EDWARD
No.
BELLA
Your eyes were black the last time I saw you, and now they're, like, golden brown--
EDWARD
--Yeah, I know, it's the...it's the fluorescents. Um...
STUDENTS
Bella?! Bella?! Dial 911. I already called. They're gonna send
somebody over soon.
TYLER
Bella, I'm so sorry. I~panicked.
STUDENT
Bella, I've got 911 on the phone now.
CHARLIE
Bella! You okay? You and I are gonna talk. You all right?
BELLA
I'm fine, Dad. Calm down.
TYLER
I'm sorry, Bella. I tried to stop.
BELLA
I know. It's okay.
CHARLIE
No. It sure as hell is not okay.
BELLA
Dad, it wasn't his fault.
CHARLIE
You could've been killed. You understand that?
BELLA
Yes. But I wasn't, so...
CHARLIE
You can kiss your license goodbye.
CARLISLE
I heard the chief's daughter was here.
CHARLIE
Oh, Dr. Cullen.
CARLISLE
Charlie.
I've got this one, Jackie.
Isabella.
BELLA
Bella.
CARLISLE
Well, Bella, looks like you took quite a spill. How do you feel?
BELLA
Good.
CARLISLE
Look here.
You might experience some post-traumatic stress or disorientation, but,
your vitals look good. No signs of any head trauma. I think you'll be just fine.
TYLER
I'm so sorry, Bella. I'm really--
BELLA
You know, it would've been a whole lot worse if Edward wasn't there. He knocked me out of the
way.
CHARLIE
Edward? Your boy?
BELLA
Yeah, it was amazing. I mean, he got to me so fast. He was nowhere near me.
CARLISLE
Sounds like you were very lucky. Charlie.
CHARLIE
I gotta go sign some paperwork. You should, uh...you should probably call your mom.
BELLA
Did you tell her? Ugh. She's probably just...freaking out.
ROSALIE
15 kids saw what happened.
EDWARD
What was I supposed to do, then? Let her die?
ROSALIE
This isn't just about you. It's about all of us.
CARLISLE
I think we should take this to my office.
BELLA
Can I talk to you for a minute?
CARLISLE
Rosalie.
EDWARD
What?
BELLA
H~how did you get over to me so fast?
EDWARD
I was standing right next to you, Bella.
BELLA
No. You were next to your car--across the lot.
EDWARD
No, I wasn't.
BELLA
Yes, you were!
EDWARD
Bella, you're, uh...you hit your head. I think you're confused.
BELLA
I know what I saw!
EDWARD
And what exactly was that?
BELLA
You...you stopped the van! Y~you pushed it away with your hand--
EDWARD
Well, nobody's gonna believe you, so...
BELLA
I wasn't gonna tell anybody. I~ just need to know the truth.
EDWARD
Can't you just thank me and get over it?
BELLA
--Thank you.
EDWARD
You're not gonna let this go, are you?
BELLA
No.
EDWARD
Well, then I hope you enjoy disappointment.
BELLA
And that was the first night I dreamt of Edward Cullen.
MR. MOLINA
I need everybody's permission slips, okay? Sammy, please collect them. Guys, let's go.
Come on, get in. In. Let's go. Inside. Inside.
MIKE
Look at you, huh? You're alive!
BELLA
I know. Yeah. False alarm, I guess.
MIKE
Yeah. Um...now, I wanted to ask you, you know, if~, you know, it's like a month away, but, uh...do
you wanna...uh, go to...go to p~prom? ...So, w~what do you think?
BELLA
About what?
MIKE
Do you want to go--to prom--with...me?
BELLA
Oh! I...Prom...dancing--not such a good idea for me. Uh...I have something that
weekend anyway. I'm~I'm going to Jacksonville that weekend.
MIKE
You can't go another weekend?
BELLA
Non-refundable ticket. You should ask Jessica. I know she wants to go with you.
MR. MOLINA
Yo, yo, yo. Hey, guys, come on. We gotta go. We gotta go! Green is what? Good! Let's
go. Guys, come on. Other bus, other bus. Let's go.
MR. MOLINA
Egg shells, carrot tops. Compost is cool. Now, stuff that in there, Eric.
ERIC
Yes, sir. Yes, sir.
MR. MOLINA
Very good, very good. Now, I am gonna make a steaming cup of compost tea. Okay.
TYLER
Give me that.
MR. MOLINA
Yeah. This is recycling in its most basic form, guys. --Don't drink it! It's for the plants!...
EDWARD
What's in Jacksonville?
BELLA
How did you know about that?
EDWARD
You didn't answer my question.
BELLA
Well, you don't answer any of mine, so...I mean, you don't even say hi to me.
EDWARD
...Hi.
BELLA
Are you gonna tell me how you stopped the van?
EDWARD
Yeah. I had an adrenaline rush. It's very common. You can Google it.
BELLA
...Floridians--that's what's in Jacksonville--
EDWARD
--Can you at least watch where you walk? Look, I'm~I'm sorry I'm being rude all the time--I
just think it's the best way.--
JESSICA
--Bella! Dude. Guess who just asked me to prom.
BELLA
Who?
JESSICA
Um...yeah, I actually totally thought that Mike was gonna ask you. Um, it's not gonna be
weird, though, right?
BELLA
No. Zero weirdness. You guys look great together.
JESSICA
I know, right?!
STUDENT
Ew! Gross!
ERIC
Bella, look. It's a worm! It's a worm.
EDWARD
Bella, we~we shouldn't be friends.
BELLA
You really should've figured that out a little earlier. I mean, why didn't you just let the van crush
me and save yourself all this...regret?
EDWARD
What--you think I regret saving you?
BELLA
I can see that you do. I just...I don't know why.
EDWARD
You don't know...anything.
ALICE
Hi! Um, are you gonna be riding with us?
EDWARD
No, our bus is full.
CHARLIE
Your mom called--again.
BELLA
Well, that's your fault. You shouldn't have told her about the almost-accident. You finished?
CHARLIE
Yeah.
Yeah, I suppose you're right. She always did know how to worry. She seems
different. She seems happy. Phil sounds like an alright guy.
BELLA
Yeah, he is. Uh...
CHARLIE
All right.
STUDENTS
No, you need the mitts. You need them. No, why do you keep
arguing with me? You~you just need them! You're gonna get frostbite.
EDWARD
I don't even know.
ERIC
Hey! La Push, baby. You in?
BELLA
Should I know what that means?
MIKE
La Push Beach down at Quileute Res. We're all going
tomorrow.
JESSICA
And there's a big swell coming in.
ERIC
And I don't just surf the Internet.
JESSICA
Eric, you stood up once, and it was a foam board.
ANGELA
But there's whale watching, too. Come with us.
ERIC
La Push, baby. It's La Push.
BELLA
Okay, I'll go if you stop saying that, okay?
MIKE
Seriously, dude. It's creepy, man.
ERIC
What? That's what it's called.
EDWARD
Edible art...Bella?
BELLA
Thanks.
You know, your mood swings are kind of giving me whiplash.
EDWARD
I only said it'd be better if we weren't friends; not that I didn't wanna be.
BELLA
What does that mean?
EDWARD
It means if you were smart, you'd stay away from me.
BELLA
Okay, well, let's say for argument's sake that I'm not smart. Would you tell me the truth?
EDWARD
No, probably not. Uh...I'd rather hear your theories.
BELLA
I have considered...radioactive spiders, and Kryptonite.
EDWARD
That's all superhero stuff, right? What if I'm not the hero? What if I'm...the bad guy?
BELLA
You're not. I can see what you're trying to put off, but, I can see that it's just to keep people away
from you. It's a mask.
Why don't we just...hang out? Everybody's going to the beach. Come--I mean, have fun.
EDWARD
Which beach?
BELLA
La Push.
EDWARD
I don't know. I...just...
BELLA
Is there something wrong with that beach?
EDWARD
It's just a little crowded.
MIKE
Hey, it's freezing.
TYLER
I'm paddling out, Coates.
ERIC
I don't know if it's worth it anymore.
JESSICA
We drove all the way out here. I'm at least paddling out.
MIKE
Yeah. She's right.
JESSICA
You guys are babies.
ANGELA
So, I keep thinking that Eric's gonna ask me to the prom, and then he just...doesn't.
BELLA
You should ask him. Take control. You're a strong, independent woman.
ANGELA
I am?
BELLA
Yes.
JESSICA
Hey, will you do me up?
ANGELA
Yeah.
JACOB
Bella!
BELLA
Hi. Jacob. Guys, this is Jacob.
JACOB
Hey, guys. How're you doing?
JESSICA
Hi.
ANGELA
Hi.
BELLA
What, are you, like, stalking me?
JACOB
You're on my res, remember? Are you surfing?
BELLA
Definitely not!
JACOB
Oh, thanks.
JESSICA
You guys should keep Bella company. Um...her date bailed.
ERIC
What date?
JESSICA
She invited Edward.
BELLA
To be polite, that's it.
ANGELA
I think it's nice she invited him. Nobody ever does.
MIKE
Yeah, 'cause Cullen's a freak.
SAM
You got that right.
BELLA
You guys know him?
SAM
The Cullens don't come here.
BELLA
What did your friends mean about, you know--"'The Cullens don't come here"?
JACOB
You caught that, huh? I'm not really supposed to say anything about it.
BELLA
Hey, I can keep a secret.
JACOB
Um...really, it's just like an old scary story.
BELLA
Well, I want to know.
JACOB
Okay, um, did you know Quileutes are supposedly descended from wolves?
BELLA
What? Like, wolves?
JACOB
Yeah!
BELLA
Like, real wolves?
JACOB
Well, uh...that's the legend of our tribe.
BELLA
Okay. So what's the story about the Cullens?
JACOB
Well, they're supposedly descended from this, like, enemy clan.
My great grandfather, the
chief, found them hunting on our land...
but, they claimed to be something different, so, we made a treaty with them:
If they promised
to stay off Quileute lands, then we wouldn't expose what they really were to the pale-faces.
BELLA
I thought they just moved here.
JACOB
...Or just moved back.
BELLA
Right.
ANGELA
It touched my hand. A snake. Stop!
BELLA
Well, what are they really?
JACOB
It's just a story, Bella. Come on, let's go.
ERIC
It's a snake! It's a snake!
WAYLON
Hello? Gerald? Gerald? Oh. Hello!
JAMES
Nice jacket.
WAYLON
Who are you?
JAMES
It's always the same inane questions:
"Who are you?'
VICTORIA
-"What do you want?"
JAMES
-"Why are you doing this?"
LAURENT
James...let's not play with our food.
WAYLON
Hang on, now...
No. No... No!
JESSICA
He's not here. Whenever the weather's nice, the Cullens disappear.
BELLA
What, do they just ditch?
JESSICA
No, um...Dr. and Mrs. Cullen yank them out for, like, hiking and camping and stuff. I tried that
out on my parents. Not even close.
ANGELA
Guys! I'm going to the prom with Eric. I just asked him. I took control.
BELLA
I told you that would happen.
ANGELA
Are you sure you have to go out of town?
BELLA
Oh, yeah, it's a little family thing.
JESSICA
Okay, we should go shopping in Port Angeles before all the good dresses get cleaned out.
BELLA
Port Angeles? You mind if I come?
ANGELA
Yeah, I need your opinion.
JESSICA
I like this one.
ANGELA
That's cool.
JESSICA
But, like, I don't know about the one-shoulder thing.
ANGELA
I like this one.
JESSICA
Yeah, I like the beading, and you wouldn't need jewelry.
ANGELA
Jess, what do you think? Lavender? Is that good? Is that my color?
JESSICA
I like it. I liked that dusty rose one, too. Okay, I like this one. It makes my boobs look good.
Right?
DRUNK HARASSERS
Hey! Nice.
ANGELA
Oh, God.
JESSICA
That is uncomfortable.
BELLA
Ugh. That's disgusting.
JESSICA
Bella, what do you think? Yes?...
BELLA
That looks great.
JESSICA
You said that about, like, the last 5 dresses, though.
BELLA
I thought they were all pretty good.
ANGELA
You're not really into this, are you?
BELLA
I actually really just want to go to this bookstore. Um...I'll meet you guys at the restaurant?
JESSICA
Are you sure?
BELLA
Yeah, yeah. I'll see you in a minute.
JESSICA
Okay.
ANGELA
Okay.
JESSICA
She's right, though. This looks awesome.
BOOKSELLER
There you go. Have a good night.
BELLA
Thank you.
DRUNK HARASSERS
Saw you in the dress store.
Hey, where you running to?
Oh. There
she is. What's up? It's my girl.
How you guys doing? Look who we just found.
What's up, girl? Hey, where you going?
Where are you going? Come get a drink with us.
Yeah, you should hang out with us.
Come on. It's fun. What's the problem?
She doesn't like that, man.
You're pretty.
BELLA
Don't touch me.
DRUNK HARASSERS
Cute. Really, no. Seriously, you should.
BELLA
Don't touch me!
EDWARD
Get in the car.
DRUNK HARASSER
That was a very dangerous maneuver.
EDWARD
I should go back there and rip those guys' heads off.
BELLA
Uh, no, you shouldn't.
EDWARD
You don't know the vile, repulsive things they were thinking!
BELLA
...And you do?
EDWARD
It's not hard to guess. Can you talk about something else?! Distract me so I won't turn
around.
BELLA
...You should put your seatbelt on.
EDWARD
You should put your seatbelt on.
ANGELA
I thought the salad was pretty good.
BELLA
Hey, you guys. I'm sorry. I just...
ANGELA
Where were you? We left you messages.
JESSICA
Yeah, we waited, but we were, like, starving, so we...
EDWARD
Um...I'm sorry I kept Bella from dinner. We just sort of ran into each other and got talking.
JESSICA
No. We totally understand. I mean, that happens, right? Um...
ANGELA
Yeah, we were--
JESSICA
--We were, yeah, we were just leaving. Bella, if you wanna...
EDWARD
I think I should make sure Bella gets something to eat--if you'd like. I'll drive you home myself.
ANGELA
That's so thoughtful.
JESSICA
It's really thoughtful. Yeah.
BELLA
Yeah. I should eat something.
ANGELA
Yeah.
JESSICA
Okay, so we'll see you tomorrow.
ANGELA
See ya.
BELLA
Okay.
WAITRESS
All right. One mushroom ravioli.
BELLA
Thanks.
WAITRESS
Yeah, no problem. So are you sure there isn't anything I can get for you?
EDWARD
No. No, thank you.
WAITRESS
Let me know.
BELLA
You're really not gonna eat?
EDWARD
No, I'm on a...special diet.
BELLA
You gotta give me some answers.
EDWARD
Mmm..."Yes" / "No" / "To get to the other side" / Uh... "1.77245"--
BELLA
--I don't want to know what the square root of pi is.
EDWARD
You knew that?
BELLA
How did you know where I was?
EDWARD
I didn't.
BELLA
All right.
EDWARD
What~don't leave. I...
BELLA
Did you...follow me?
EDWARD
I...I feel...very...protective...of you.
BELLA
So you followed me.
EDWARD
I was trying to keep a distance unless you needed my help, and then I heard what those low-
lifes were thinking--
BELLA
--Wait. You say you heard what they were thinking? So, what--you...you read minds?
EDWARD
I can read every mind in this room--apart from yours. There's money, sex, money, sex, ...cat.
And then you--nothing. It's very frustrating.
BELLA
Is there something wrong with me?
EDWARD
See, I tell you I can read minds, and you think there's something wrong with you.
BELLA
What is it?
EDWARD
I don't have...the strength...to...stay away from you anymore.
BELLA
Then don't.
BELLA
Okay, I think I'm warm enough now. Your hand is so cold.
Whoa. What is going on? My dad's
still here. Can you pull in?
EDWARD
That's my father's car on the end. What is he doing here?
Carlisle, what's going on?
CARLISLE
Waylon Forge was found in a boat out near his place. I just examined the body.
BELLA
He died?! How?!
CARLISLE
Animal attack.
BELLA
Was it the same one that got that security guard down in Mason?
CARLISLE
Most likely.
BELLA
Well, it's getting closer to town, then.
CARLISLE
Bella, you should go inside. Waylon was your father's friend.
BELLA
Okay. Um...I'll see you later.
BELLA
Hey.
CHARLIE
Hey.
BELLA
Dad, I'm really sorry.
CHARLIE
I've known him going on 30 years. Don't worry. We're gonna~we're gonna find this thing.
Meantime...I want you to carry this with you.
BELLA
I don't know--
CHARLIE
--It'll give your old man some peace of mind.
BELLA
Okay.
CHARLIE
Let's go home.
BELLA
"Cold One".
BELLA
You're impossibly fast and strong. Your skin is pale white and ice-cold.
Your eyes change
color; And sometimes you speak like...like you're from a different time.
You never eat or drink anything. You don't go out in the sunlight.
How old are you?
EDWARD
17.
BELLA
How long have you been 17?
EDWARD
...A while.
BELLA
I know what you are.
EDWARD
Say it--out loud. Say it!
BELLA
V~ampire.
EDWARD
Are you afraid?
BELLA
No.
EDWARD
Then ask me the most basic question: What do we eat?
BELLA
You won't hurt me. Where are we going?
EDWARD
Up the mountain, out of the cloud bank. You need to see what I look like in the
sunlight.
EDWARD
This is why we don't show ourselves in sunlight. People would know we're different. This is
what I am.
BELLA
It's like diamonds. You're beautiful.
EDWARD
Beautiful? This is the skin of a killer, Bella. I'm a killer.
BELLA
I don't believe that.
EDWARD
That's because you believe a lie. It's camouflage. I'm the world's most dangerous predator.
Everything about me invites you in: my voice, my face, even my smell--as if I would need any of that.
As if you could outrun me. As if
you could fight me off. I'm designed to kill.
BELLA
I don't care.
EDWARD
I've killed people before.
BELLA
It does not matter.
EDWARD
I wanted to kill you. I've never wanted a human's blood so much in my life.
BELLA
I trust you.
EDWARD
...Don't.
BELLA
...I'm here. I trust you.
EDWARD
My family--we're different from others of our kind. We only hunt animals. We've learned to
control our thirst. But it's you--your scent...it's like a drug to me.
You're like my own personal brand of heroin.
BELLA
Why did you hate me so much when we met?
EDWARD
I did, only for making me want you so badly. I still don't know if I can control
myself.
BELLA
I know you can.
EDWARD
I can't read your mind. You have to tell me what you're thinking.
BELLA
Now I'm afraid.
EDWARD
...Good.
BELLA
I'm not afraid of you. I'm only afraid of losing you. I feel like you're gonna disappear.
EDWARD
You don't know how long I've waited for you. So the lion fell in love with the lamb.
BELLA
What a stupid lamb.
EDWARD
What a sick, masochistic lion.
EDWARD
If I ever hurt you, I couldn't live with myself. You don't know how it's tortured me.
BELLA
Edward, I'd rather die than stay away from you.
BELLA
About three things I was absolutely positive:
1st - Edward was a vampire.
2nd - there was a part of him, and I didn't know how dominant that part might be, that
thirsted for my blood.
And
3rd - I was unconditionally and irrevocably in love with him.
JESSICA
Monte Carlo? That's our prom theme?!
ERIC
Mm hm! Gambling, tuxedos, and Bond--James Bond.
ANGELA
Oh, my God.
BELLA
Wow. You know, everybody's staring.
EDWARD
Not that guy. Uh...no, he just looked. I'm breaking all the rules now anyway--since I'm going to
hell.
BELLA
So, does a person have to be dying...to become like you?
EDWARD
No, that's...that's just Carlisle. He'd never do this to someone who had another choice.
BELLA
So, how long have you been like this?
EDWARD
Since 1918--that's when Carlisle found me dying of Spanish influenza.
BELLA
What was it like?
EDWARD
The venom was excruciating, but, what Carlisle did was much harder. Not many of us have
the restraint to do that.
BELLA
But didn't he just have to...bite?
EDWARD
Not exactly. When we taste human blood, a sort of frenzy begins, and it's almost impossible
to stop.
BELLA
But, Carlisle did.
EDWARD
First with me, and then with his wife, Esme.
BELLA
So is Carlisle the real reason that you don't kill people?
EDWARD
No, he's not the only reason. I don't want to be a monster.
My family--we think of
ourselves as vegetarians, right ('cause we only survive on the blood of animals).
But it's...it's like a human only living on tofu: It keeps you
strong, but, you're never fully satisfied.
It wouldn't be like drinking your blood, for instance.
BELLA
Was it other vampires that killed Waylon?
EDWARD
Yeah. There are others out there, and we run into them from time to time.
BELLA
Can the rest of your family read people's minds like you can?
EDWARD
Um...no. That's just me. But, Alice can...Alice see the future.
BELLA
I bet she saw me coming.
EDWARD
Alice's visions are subjective. I mean, the future could always change.
EDWARD
Bella, you shouldn't really walk around the woods by yourself anymore, or,
at least, not without me.
BELLA
You don't think I can take care of myself?
EDWARD
I know you can't--and, uh...sometimes, I'm not the most dangerous thing
out there.
BELLA
Those were other vampires that killed Waylon...right?
EDWARD
Can you just be more careful? Alright?
BELLA
Maybe my number was up when that van almost crushed me. You know,
maybe you're just messing around with fate.
EDWARD
Bella, your number was up the 1st day I met you.
BELLA
You really want a taste?
EDWARD
Yeah!
BELLA
Ow!
EDWARD
Oh, you fragile little human.
BELLA
Could you act human? I mean, I've got neighbors.
EDWARD
I'm gonna take you to my place tomorrow.
BELLA
Thanks. Uh...wait, like, with your family?
EDWARD
Yeah.
BELLA
What if they don't like me?
EDWARD
So, you're worried not because you'll be in a house full of vampires, but, because you think
they won't approve of you?
BELLA
I'm glad I amuse you. What is it?
EDWARD
A complication. I'll pick you up tomorrow.
BELLA
Hey. Come to visit your truck?
JACOB
Yeah! Looks good. Got that dent out.
BELLA
Yeah.
BILLY
Actually, we came to visit your flat-screen. First Mariners game of the season. Plus Jacob here
keeps bugging me about seeing you again.
JACOB
Great, Dad. Thanks.
BILLY
Just keeping it real, son.
CHARLIE
Vitamin R.
BILLY
Well done, Chief. Harry Clearwater's homemade fish fry.
CHARLIE
Good man.
BILLY
Any luck with that Waylon case?
CHARLIE
Well, I don't think it was an animal that killed him.
BILLY
Never thought it was.
CHARLIE
So spread the word out at the res, huh? Keep the kids out of the woods.
BILLY
Will do. Don't want no one else getting hurt, do we?
BELLA
Whoa. This is incredible. It's so light and open, you know?
EDWARD
What did you expect? Coffins and dungeons and moats?
BELLA
No, not the moats.
EDWARD
"Not the moats". This is the one place we don't have to hide. ...I told them not to do this.
CHEF ON TV
You add a little bit of olive oil to a non-stick sauté pan, and you want to cook with
the olive oil in medium-high heat.
What I do: I cut this in strips, and then we're gonna cut this--
ROSALIE
Is she even Italian?
EMMETT
Her name is Bella.
CARLISLE
I'm sure she'll love it, no matter what.
ROSALIE
Whoo--Get a whiff of that. Here comes the human!
ESME
Bella, we're making Italiano for you.
BELLA
Oh! Mmm.
EDWARD
Bella, this is Esme. My mother for all intents and purposes.
BELLA
Buon giorno
ESME ???
Molto Belle
CARLISLE
You've given us an excuse to use the kitchen for the first time.
ESME
I hope you're hungry.
BELLA
Yeah, absolutely.
EDWARD
She already ate.
ROSALIE
Perfect.
BELLA
Yeah, it's just because I know that you~I know that you guys don't eat, so--
ESME
Of course. It's very considerate of you.
EDWARD
Just ignore Rosalie. I do.
ROSALIE
Yeah. Let's just keep pretending like this isn't dangerous for all of us.
BELLA
I would never tell anybody anything.
CARLISLE
She knows that.
EMMETT
Yeah, well, the problem is, you 2 have gone public now, so...
ESME
Emmett.
ROSALIE
No, she should know. The entire family will be implicated if this ends badly.
BELLA
Badly, as in...I~I would become the meal?
ALICE
Hi, Bella. I'm Alice.
BELLA
Um...hi.
ALICE
Oh! You do smell good.
EDWARD
Alice, what are you--
ALICE
--It's okay. Bella and I are gonna be great friends.
CARLISLE
Sorry, Jasper's our newest vegetarian. It's a little difficult for him.
JASPER
It's a pleasure to meet you.
ALICE
It's okay, Jasper. You won't hurt her.
EDWARD
All right. Uh...I'm gonna take you on a tour of the rest of the house.
BELLA
Okay.
ALICE
Well, I'll see you soon.
BELLA
Okay.
ESME
How cute!
ALICE
I know!
CARLISLE
I think that went well.
ESME
Clean this up. Now.
EDWARD
Was that as weird for you as it was for me?
BELLA
I don't know. Graduation caps?
EDWARD
Uh, yeah. It's a...private joke. We matriculate a lot.
BELLA
That's kind of miserable. I mean, repeating high school over and over.
EDWARD
True, but the younger we start out in a new place, the longer we can stay there. Come on.
Uh...yeah, this is my room.
BELLA
You~you realize...how cool this is?
It's like 100 years worth of journals...
EDWARD
Yeah...I~I wouldn't, um...I wouldn't read that...unless you have trouble
sleeping. But, you can if you want.
BELLA
...No bed?
EDWARD
Uh, no, I don't...I don't sleep.
BELLA
...Ever?
EDWARD
No, not at all.
BELLA
I used to make these--rainsticks.
I had a chinchilla and me and my
mom used to make these out of the chinchilla's droppings and, uh...you know--paper towel rolls. Maybe that's weird...
Okay. Mm.
Wow, you have so much music.
EDWARD
You got any favorites?
BELLA
Yeah. I~I don't really wanna tell you what they
are.
EDWARD
Why not?
BELLA
What are you
listening to?
EDWARD
It's, uh, Debussy. I don't know...
BELLA
Yeah. Claire De Lune is great.
EDWARD
What?
BELLA
I can't dance.
EDWARD
Hm. Well, I could always make you.
BELLA
I'm not scared of you.
EDWARD
Well, you really shouldn't have said that.
EDWARD
You better hold on tight, spider monkey.
ESME
She's brought him to life.
CARLISLE
He's been alone too long. How can it end well?
ESME
Alice has been wrong before.
CARLISLE
Not often.
ESME
Carlisle, Bella is what he wants. It will work out...somehow.
CARLISLE
You're a hopeless romantic.
EDWARD
Do you trust me?
BELLA
In theory.
EDWARD
Then close your eyes. What?
BELLA
This isn't real. This kind of stuff just doesn't exist.
EDWARD
It does in my world.
INVESTIGATORS
Whoa! Hold up.
CHARLIE
It's human.
VICTORIA
They took the bait!
JAMES
Mm. By tomorrow, they'll be half way to Winnipeg.
VICTORIA
I do love it when men chase me.
MIKE
Arizona! Yo, what's happening?
So you~you and Cullen, huh? That's... I don't like it. I mean,
I don't know. He just looks at you like you're something to eat.
WAITRESS
Here's your veggie plate, Stephenie.
BELLA
Hey, sorry I'm late. Biology project.
CHARLIE
I ordered you the spinach salad. I hope that's okay.
BELLA
You should order one for yourself next time. Cut back on the steak.
CHARLIE
Hey, I'm as healthy as a horse.
WAITRESS
Say, Chief, boys want to know--did you find anything down by Queets River today?
CHARLIE
Yeah, we found a bare human footprint, but, it looks like whoever that [is] is headed east, so
Kitsap County sheriff is gonna take over from here.
WAITRESS
Okay.
CHARLIE
Okay?
WAITRESS
I just hope they catch him fast.
CHARLIE
Looks like your friends are flagging you. It's okay if you wanna go join them. I'm just gonna
turn in early anyway.
BELLA
Me, too.
CHARLIE
Bella, it's Friday night. Go out. Looks like the Newton boy's got a big smile for you.
BELLA
Yeah, he's a good buddy.
CHARLIE
What about any of these other yahoos in town? Anybody interest you?
BELLA
Dad, we're gonna talk about boys?
CHARLIE
Yeah, I guess not. I just, um...feel like I leave you alone too much. You should...be around
people.
BELLA
I don't really mind being alone. I guess I'm kind of like my dad in that way.
BELLA
So, how's all the baseball stuff going?
RENEE
Oh...Phil's working so hard. You know--spring training.
We're looking for a house to rent in
case things become more permanent. You'd like Jacksonville, baby.
BELLA
Yeah? I'm really liking Forks.
RENEE
What?
BELLA
Forks is growing on me.
RENEE
Could a guy have anything to do with that?
BELLA
Well, yeah.
RENEE
I knew it! Tell me everything. What is he? Jock? Indie? I bet he's smart. Is he smart?
BELLA
Mom, can I talk to you later?
RENEE
Come on, we gotta talk boys. Are you being safe?
BELLA
How did you get in here?
EDWARD
The window.
BELLA
Do you do that a lot?
EDWARD
Well, just the past couple of months. I like watching you sleep. It's, um...it's kind of
fascinating to me.
I always wanted to try one thing. Just stay very still. Don't move. Stop it!
BELLA
I'm sorry.
EDWARD
I'm stronger than I thought...
BELLA
Yeah, I~I wish I could say the same.
EDWARD
I can't ever lose control with you.
BELLA
Hey, don't go.
BELLA
Hey, got you another one.
CHARLIE
Thanks.
BELLA
I have a date with Edward Cullen.
CHARLIE
He's a little old for you, isn't he?
BELLA
No. He's a junior. I'm a junior. I thought you liked the Cullens.
CHARLIE
I thought you didn't like any of the boys in town.
BELLA
Edward doesn't live in town--technically. He's right outside.
CHARLIE
He is?
BELLA
Yeah, he wanted to meet you--officially.
CHARLIE
All right. Bring him in.
BELLA
Could you be nice? He's...he's important.
EDWARD
Chief Swan. I want to formally introduce myself. I'm Edward Cullen.
CHARLIE
Hi, Edward.
EDWARD
Bella won't be out too late tonight. She's just gonna play baseball with my family.
CHARLIE
Baseball?
EDWARD
Yes, sir, that's the plan.
CHARLIE
Bella's gonna play baseball. Well, good luck with that.
EDWARD
I'll take good care of her. I promise.
CHARLIE
Hey. Still got that pepper spray?
BELLA
Yeah...Dad...
EDWARD
It's funny--your father thinks you should go to an all-girls school.
BELLA
That's not fair! Don't read Charlie's mind--and since when do
vampires like baseball?
EDWARD
Well, it's the American pastime, and, uh...there's a thunderstorm coming. It's the only time we
can play. You'll see why. Get in the car.
ESME
Hey. Glad you're here. We need an umpire.
EMMETT
She thinks we cheat.
ESME
Oh, I know you cheat. Call them as you see them, Bella.
BELLA
Okay.
ALICE
It's time.
BELLA
Okay, now I see why you need the thunder. That's gotta be a home run, right?
ESME
Edward's very fast.
BELLA
You're out.
EMMETT
Out! Whoo! Babe, come on. It's just a game.
CARLISLE
Nice kitty.
EDWARD
What are you doing?
ROSALIE
My monkey man.
ALICE
Stop! They were leaving, then they heard us.
EDWARD
Let's go.
CARLISLE
It's too late.
EDWARD
Get your hair down.
ROSALIE
Like that'll help. I can smell her from across the field.
EDWARD
I shouldn't have brought you here. I'm so sorry.
BELLA
What?
EDWARD
Just be quiet and stand behind me.
LAURENT
I believe this belongs to you.
CARLISLE
Thank you.
LAURENT
I am Laurent, and this is Victoria, and James.
CARLISLE
I'm Carlisle. This is my family.
LAURENT
Hello.
CARLISLE
I'm afraid your hunting activities have caused something of a mess for us.
LAURENT
Our apologies. We didn't realize the territory had been claimed.
CARLISLE
Yes, well, we maintain a permanent residence nearby.
LAURENT
Really? Well, we won't be a problem anymore. We were just passing through.
VICTORIA
The humans were tracking us, but we led them east. You should be safe.
CARLISLE
Excellent.
LAURENT
So, could you use 3 more players? Oh, come on. Just 1 game.
CARLISLE
Sure. Why not? A few of us were leaving. You could take their place. We'll bat first.
VICTORIA
I'm the one with the wicked curveball.
JASPER
Well, I think we can handle that.
VICTORIA
We shall see.
JAMES
You brought a snack.
LAURENT
A human?
CARLISLE
The girl is with us. I think it best if you leave.
LAURENT
I can see the game is over. We'll go now. James.
CARLISLE
Get Bella out of here. Go.
BELLA
Okay, I've got it. I've got it. I'm all right. What, now he's coming after me?
EDWARD
Listen to me. James is a tracker. The hunt is his obsession. I read his mind.
My
reaction on the field set him off. I just made this his most exciting game ever. He's never gonna stop.
BELLA
What should we do?
EDWARD
We have to kill him. Rip him apart and burn the pieces.
BELLA
Where are we going?
EDWARD
Away from Forks. We'll get a ferry to Vancouver.
BELLA
I have to go home--now. You have to take me home.
EDWARD
You can't go home. He's just gonna trace your scent there. It's the first place he's gonna look.
BELLA
But my dad is there. We--
EDWARD
--It doesn't matter!
BELLA
Yes, it does! He could get killed because of us!
EDWARD
Just let me get you out of here first, all right?
BELLA
It's my dad. We have to go back. We'll figure a way to lead the tracker away somehow. I don't
know, but, we have to do something.
BELLA
Edward, I said leave me alone.
EDWARD
Bella, don't do this, please.
BELLA
It's over. Get out!
CHARLIE
Hey, hey, hey, hey. Bella? What's going on?
BELLA
I just gotta get out of here. I'm leaving now.
Hey.
CHARLIE
Bella?
BELLA
Well, what am I gonna say to him? I can't hurt him.
CHARLIE
Bella, what's going on?
EDWARD
You just have to. I'll be down at the truck.
CHARLIE
Did he hurt you?
BELLA
No.
CHARLIE
Break up with you or something?
BELLA
No, I~I broke up with him.
CHARLIE
I thought you liked him.
BELLA
Yeah, that's~that's why I have to leave. I~I don't want this. I have to go home.
CHARLIE
Home? Your...your mom's not even in Phoenix.
BELLA
She'll come home. I'll call her from the road.
CHARLIE
You're not gonna drive home right now. You can sleep on it. If you still feel like going in the
morning, I'll take you to the airport.
BELLA
No. I~I want to drive. It'll give me more time to think. I mean, if~if I get really tired, I'll pull into a
motel. I promise.
CHARLIE
Look, Bella, I know I'm not that much fun to be around, but I can change that. We can~we can
do more stuff together.
BELLA
Like what? Like watch baseball on the flat-screen? Eat at the diner every night--steak and
cobbler? Dad, that's you. That's not me.
CHARLIE
Bella, come on, I just...I just got you back.
BELLA
Yeah, and, you know, if I don't get out now, then I'm just gonna be stuck here like
Mom.
EDWARD
Your father's gonna forgive you. Why don't you let me drive?
BELLA
He won't. You should've seen his face. I told him the same thing that my mom told him when she
was leaving him.
EDWARD
It's the only way he'd let you go. Just don't worry about him now. He's safe. The tracker's
following us.
BELLA
Oh, God.
EDWARD
It's just Emmett. Alice is in the car behind us.
CARLISLE
Wait. He came to warn us...about James.
LAURENT
This isn't my fight, and I've grown tired of his games, but, he's got unparalleled senses--
absolutely lethal.
I've never seen anything like him in my 300 years.
And the woman--Victoria--don't underestimate her.
JASPER
I've had to fight our kind before. They're not easy to kill.
EMMETT
But not impossible.
JASPER
We'll tear them apart and burn the pieces.
CARLISLE
I don't relish the thought of killing another creature, even a sadistic one like James.
ROSALIE
What if he kills one of us first?
EDWARD
I'm gonna run Bella south. Can you lead the tracker away from here?
CARLISLE
No, Edward. James knows you would never leave Bella. He'll follow you.
ALICE
I'll go with Bella. Jasper and I will drive her south. I'll keep her safe, Edward.
EDWARD
Can you keep your thoughts to yourself?
ALICE
Yes.
EDWARD
Rosalie, Esme, could you put these on so the tracker will pick up Bella's scent?
ROSALIE
Why? What is she to me?
EDWARD
Rosalie, Bella is with Edward. She's part of this family now, and we protect our family.
BELLA
Oh, God. If anything...What if...If anything happens, I swear to God...
EDWARD
Nothing's gonna happen. There's 7 of us, and there's 2 of them, and when everything's done,
I'm gonna come back and get you.
BELLA
Yeah?
EDWARD
Bella, you are my life now.
BELLA
Hey, Mom. It's me again. Um, you must have let your phone die or something. I'm not in Forks, but
everything's okay, and I'll explain it later.
EDWARD
Rosalie, mark the tree. That's good.
JASPER
What is it? What do you see?
EDWARD
He's figured it out.
ALICE
The tracker--he just changed course.
JASPER
Where will it take him, Alice?
ALICE
Mirrors. A room full of mirrors.
BELLA
Edward said the visions weren't always certain.
JASPER
She sees the course people are on while they're on it. If they change their minds, the vision
changes.
BELLA
Okay, so the course that the tracker's on now is gonna lead him to a ballet studio?
ALICE
You've been here?
BELLA
I took lessons as a kid. The school I went to had an arch just like that.
JASPER
Was your school here in Phoenix?
BELLA
Yeah.
BELLA
Edward, are you okay?
EDWARD
We've lost the tracker. The woman's still in the area. Rosalie and Esme are going back to
Forks to protect your father.
I'm coming to get you. Then, you and I are gonna go somewhere alone, and the others will keep hunting. I'll do
whatever it takes to make you safe again.
BELLA
Hey, Mom, I'm glad you got my message. What are you doing home?
RENEE
Bella? Bella? Bella, where are you?
BELLA
Calm down, everything's fine.
RENEE
Bella? Bella?
BELLA
I'll explain everything later. Mom, are you there?
JAMES
Forks High School doesn't protect its students' privacy very well. It was just too easy for Victoria
to find your previous address.
It's a nice house you have here. I was prepared to wait for you,
but then Mom came home after she
received a very worried call from your dad, and it all worked out quite well. Mm...
RENEE
Please, wait...
BELLA
Don't touch her. Don't--just--
JAMES
--You can still save her.
BELLA
Don't!--
JAMES
But you're gonna have to get away from your friends. Can you handle that?
BELLA
Where should I meet you?
JAMES
How about your old ballet studio? And I'll know if you bring anyone along. Poor Mommy would
pay the price for that mistake.
BELLA
I'd never given much thought to how I would die, but, dying in the place of someone I
love...seems like a good way to go.
I can't bring myself to regret the decisions that brought me face-to-face with death.
They also
brought me to Edward.
RENEE
Bella? Bella? Bella, where are you?
BELLA
Mom?
RENEE
Bella?
BELLA
Mom?
RENEE -- [on a video recording]
There you are. What are you doing in here?
BELLA -- [on a video recording]
Everyone makes fun of me.
RENEE -- [on a video recording]
Come on, you're a wonderful dancer.
BELLA-- [on a video recording]
Mom, I suck.
RENEE-- [on a video recording]
You do not suck.
JAMES
That's my favorite part. You were a stubborn child, weren't you? Hm?
BELLA
She's not even here.
JAMES
No. Sorry. You know, but you really made it too easy. So, to make things more entertaining, I'm
gonna make a little film of our time together.
I borrowed this from your house. I hope you don't mind? Good. And...action. Aw. That'll break
Edward's little heart.
BELLA
You have...Edward has nothing to do with this!
JAMES
But he does. His rage will make for more interesting sport than his feeble attempt to protect
you. And let's continue.
Beautiful. Very visually dynamic. I chose my stage well.
It's too bad he didn't have the strength to turn you.
Instead, he kept you this fragile little human. It's cruel, really.
Tell Edward how much it hurts. Tell him to avenge you. Tell him!
BELLA
No, Edward, don't!
JAMES
Tell him. Tell him!
You're alone...'cause you're faster than the others--but, not stronger.
EDWARD
I'm strong enough to kill you.
I'm sorry.
ALICE
Bella, Bella, it's okay.
CARLISLE
Son. Enough. Remember who you are.
ALICE
Bella, you're okay.
CARLISLE
Bella needs you.
ALICE
It's okay. It's okay. Oh, God. Carlisle! Her blood.
CARLISLE
Your brothers will take care of him.
EMMETT & JASPER
I got him. Start the fire. Get the floorboards. Alice!
CARLISLE
Alice, go. Her femoral artery's been severed. She's losing too much blood.
BELLA
No, no, no--my hand--it's burning.
EDWARD
It's the venom.
CARLISLE
You have to make a choice. You could let the change happen.
EDWARD
No...No!
ALICE
It's gonna happen, Edward. I've seen it.
EDWARD
It doesn't have to be that way.
CARLISLE
She's still hemorrhaging. Alice, make me a tourniquet of your belt.
EDWARD
Carlisle, what's my other option?
CARLISLE
Tie it above my hands.
EDWARD
Carlisle?!
CARLISLE
Go.
You could try to suck the venom out.
EDWARD
You know I won't be able to stop.
CARLISLE
Then find the will to stop. But choose. She only has minutes left.
EDWARD
I'll make it go away, Bella. I'm gonna make it go away.
CARLISLE
Edward, stop. Her blood is clean. You're killing her. Edward. Stop. Stop. Find the will.
BELLA
Death is peaceful. Easy. Life is harder.
RENEE
Bella? Baby? Bella?
BELLA
Mom?
RENEE
Hey.
BELLA
Where is he? Where's...where's Edward?
RENEE
He's asleep. He never leaves. And your dad--he's down at the cafeteria.
BELLA
What happened?
RENEE
Well, when you fell, you broke your leg, and you lost a lot of blood.
You don't remember
any of this, do you?
Edward came down with his dad to try to convince you to come back to Forks
so, you went over to their hotel,
then you tripped, and you fell down 2 flights of stairs--right through a window.
BELLA
Yeah, that sounds like me.
RENEE
Oh, honey, I'm so sorry. It's Phil. He's so worried about you.
BELLA
You're texting?
RENEE
Finally, yeah. I told him to stay down in Florida.
Oh, Honey, you are gonna love
Jacksonville. It's sunny every day, and we found the cutest little house, and you've got your own bathroom.
BELLA
Mom, I still want to live in Forks.
RENEE
What?
BELLA
I want to live in Forks.
RENEE
Well, okay, we'll~we'll talk about it.
BELLA
Do you mind getting Dad? I have to talk to him--apologize.
RENEE
Okay, baby. I'll go get him. And I'll go get a nurse, okay?
BELLA
So what happened? W~where's James?
EDWARD
We took care of it. And the woman, Victoria--she ran off.
BELLA
I'm alive because of you.
EDWARD
No, you're in here because of me. The worst part of it was that I thought I wasn't gonna be
able to stop.
BELLA
You did stop.
EDWARD
Bella, you gotta go to Jacksonville so I can't hurt you anymore.
BELLA
What? Are you... No. No!
How~I don't even know what you're... How...What are you talking
about? You want me to go away? I can't... No, I can't... I can't just leave you...
EDWARD
I know.
BELLA
We can't be apart. You can't leave me.
EDWARD
I'm here.
BELLA
Okay, just don't...You just can't say stuff like that to me--ever.
EDWARD
Where else am I gonna go?
BELLA
Alice lent me the dress. The cast is...
EDWARD
You're perfect. I'll take care of her, Chief Swan.
CHARLIE
Uh huh. I've heard that before. All right, Bells. I put a new can of pepper spray in your bag.
BELLA
Dad!
CHARLIE
And, um...Well, you look beautiful.
BELLA
Thanks. See you.
EDWARD
Hey. I'll be right back.
JACOB
Bella!
BELLA
Jacob! Hey.
JACOB
Nice.
BELLA
You, too. Are you crashing the prom or something? Did you come with a date?
JACOB
No. Uh...my dad paid me to come talk to you. 20 bucks.
BELLA
Let's hear it.
JACOB
Just don't get mad, okay? He wants you to break up with your boyfriend. It's just, he said,
uh...quote: "We'll be watching you".
BELLA
Okay, well, tell him: "Thanks".
JACOB
Okay.
BELLA
And to pay up.
JACOB
Okay. Oh, let me help you.
EDWARD
Jacob. I'll take it from here.
JACOB
Guess I'll see you around, Bella.
EDWARD
I leave you alone for 2 minutes, and the wolves descend.
BELLA
I can't believe you're making me do this.
EDWARD
Just smile.
BELLA
Wow. You are really trying to kill me.
EDWARD
Prom is an important rite of passage. I didn't want you to miss anything.
BELLA
Oh.
ERIC
Bella! Hey.
EDWARD
Do you want to go?
BELLA
Yeah.
DJ
Alright--we're slowing it down.
EDWARD
Shall we?
BELLA
You're serious?
EDWARD
Oh, why not? See, you're dancing...
BELLA
...at prom.
Edward, why did you save me? If you just let the venom spread, I could be like
you by now.
EDWARD
You don't know what you're saying. You don't want this.
BELLA
I want you--always.
EDWARD
I'm not gonna end your life for you.
BELLA
I'm dying already--every second I get closer/older.
EDWARD
That's the way it's supposed to be.
BELLA
Alice said that she saw me like you. I heard her.
EDWARD
Her visions change.
BELLA
Yeah, based on what people decide. I've decided.
EDWARD
So that's what you dream about--becoming a monster?
BELLA
I dream about being with you forever.
EDWARD
Forever? And you're ready right now?
BELLA
Yes.
EDWARD
Is it not enough...just to have a long and happy life with me?
BELLA
Yeah...for now.
No one will surrender tonight, but I won't give in. I know what I want.
